About the Scholarship

The Mike Doran Memorial Scholarship was established in August 2023 by his family in honor of his many contributions as a teacher, coach and mentor. At Ithaca High School, Mike dove head first into coaching, where he found his true passion and calling. He quickly became ‘Coach’ or ‘Coach D’. For the next 31 years, Mike coached football, wrestling, and softball as a Yellowjacket. He believed passionately that there were valuable lessons to be learned on the playing field; among them, resiliency, teamwork, hard work, integrity, and commitment. His students and athletes were an integral part of who he was. He loved to push them to be better, make them laugh with his endless banter and bad jokes, and lend his advice on all topics in life. Mike understood that relationships were at the heart of being an educator and coach. He was a master at both.

One scholarship for $500.

Requirements

The scholarship will be awarded based on the following criteria for eligibility:

  • Must be a current or previous graduate of Ithaca High School, pursuing post-secondary education at a college, university, vocational, or trade school.
  • In 500 to 1,000 words, submit an essay outlining your career and educational goals and why community involvement and moral character are important to you.
  • Submit one letter of recommendation from a non-family member (example: teacher, advisor, clergy, etc.).
